2011 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am Golf Preview
It doesn’t have a star-studded lineup like the Dubai Desert Classic, but the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am also tees off Thursday with the first round. The biggest names in this golf event are Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson. The tournament takes place at three different courses: Pebble Beach Links, Monterrey Peninsula and Spyglass Hill.
Johnson head the betting as a he goes for a third straight Pebble Beach Pro-Am win. His current form suggests looking elsewhere but this may be the type of competition to get him back on track. Johnson only won one event following his Pebble Beach Pro-Am victory last year. It was the BMW Classic in September. He had a chance in the U.S. Open but blew it. His finishes this year include a tie for third in the Famers Insurance Open, a tie for ninth in the Hyundai Tournament of Champions and a tie for 29th last week in the Phoenix Open.
His main competition is Mickelson, a three-time winner in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Mickelson also tied for 29th at the Phoenix Open but came in second in the Famers Insurance Open. He has been taking some time off here and there and hasn’t won a PGA Tour event in nearly a year. He still managed to finish in the top 10 in the FedEx Cup standings last year, but there are better betting opportunities in this field.
Geoff Ogilvy returned last week after missing most of January with an injury. He tied for 13 at the Phoenix Open. He played well late last year with an Australian Open win and a play-off loss in the Australian PGA Championship. However, the last six Pebble Beach winners have been American.
We had a rare Vijay Singh sighting last week as the veteran tied for third at the Phoenix Open. It was his best finish since 2008. As a runner up here three times in the last 10 years, he has plenty of value. He finished second in 2008 and won it in 2004 as the only winner outside the United States in the past 10 years.
Mark Wilson is making his name known this year with two wins in three starts. If you like to ride the hot hand, Wilson is your man coming off a Phoenix Open victory. Padraig Harrington is making his first start in the states. He has endured a bad start to 2011 with a 58th place finish at the Volvo Champions and disqualification in Abu Dhabi.
