Amour Propre on top in Flying Five at Curragh
AMOUR PROPRE maintained the stranglehold of British-trained sprinters in the Curragh Group 3 as he shot clear of the pack to post his first win since May 2009.
Raiders from across the Irish Sea now have a whitewash on the ten-year-trends in the race after Amour Propre justified the faith and patience that trainer Henry Candy and his owners have had in him.
Sunday’s race was just the sixth outing the five-year-old has had in the last two seasons and he went one better than his two previous starts this year when he finished second to Masamah at both York and Goodwood.
Regular rider Dane O’Neill had him in a prominent position from the off with his every move covered by last season’s Nunthorpe winner Sole Power and the hat-trick seeking Roicead. Those two were able to press him right up until the final half furlong when O’Neill stepped it up to score on the 15-8 favourite by a length and three-quarters from Sole Power.
O’Neill, who has ridden Amour Propre in four of his five wins said: “His two runs this season were good. We were hoping he’d maintain that level of performance.
“It’s nice forhim to get his head in front again. He’s had his problems but Henry’s done well to get him back to any form of racing.”
