Manchester City manager frustrated after Sunderland defeat

Manchester City were top of the Premier League going into the New Year, although a 1-0 defeat at Sunderland on Sunday means that they stay ahead of Manchester United only on  goal difference.

It appeared that the match at the Stadium of Light was set to end goalless, the same as City’s last away game against West Brom, although Ji-Dong-won’s last-gasp winner helped the Black Cats to a priceless win.

When asked if the performance was good enough, Mancini said: No, not for a top team. In that situation, we attacked with eight players and the same players who attack need to come back and run quickly.

I know football and for that reason in the last 15 minutes, I continued to call [central defenders] Vinny [Vincent Kompany] and [Joleon] Lescott to say, Stay there, stay there, dont leave the space, because that was dangerous.

We continued to attack and sometimes we wanted to attack with 10 players. This is impossible.

But thats it, its finished. We have a game in 48 hours and we need to recover now.

It is not the first time that City have been guilty of pouring forward in numbers, with the recent 1-0 win over Arsenal seeing both teams adopt a gung ho approach and many will think the league leaders might be coming off the rails.
