Super League Betting: Warriors to put Hull to the sword?
“Michael Maguire’s side go to the KC Stadium on Friday night brimming with confidence after seven successive wins.”
Rampant Wigan go to struggling Hull on Friday night and it could be an evening to forget for the home side. Meanwhile, is this the week for the Giants’ backlash? Stuart Jones selects the best bets.
Last week’s Challenge Cup action certainly didn’t disappoint and the opening half of the Warrington and Wigan game was as good as it gets on this side of the globe.
All four sides that feature in this week’s Sky games were in action last week, but only Wigan progressed to the semi-finals.
Richard Agar’s men improved markedly on their performance from the previous week at Headingley, but still came up short when it mattered, and in the absence of Sean Long, they continue to look rather toothless in attack.
Don’t get me wrong, they created more chances in the opening three minutes than they did in the full eighty at Headingley, but the sheer effort of their first half performance took its toll in the end as huge gaps began to open up as Leeds powered forward.
Wigan have the meanest defence in Super League and I don’t expect them to have too much problem containing an attack as predictable as Hull’s. Whilst Will Sharp was the closest thing to an attacking option on Agar’s bench last week, Wigan are able to rotate between Brett Finch, Paul Deacon and Thomas Leluai. That’s not including the mercurial talent of Sam Tomkins at full-back.
Wigan could be forgiven for not approaching this game with the same level of intensity as last week, though with the possibility of doing the treble this season, they really shouldn’t be lacking in motivation.
I can see this being a game where Wigan just do enough to get the win rather that put Hull to the sword, and if Joe Westerman and Craig Fitzgibbon have recovered from injury, then taking the Warriors to win by 1-12 and unders on the points looks the way to play this one.
The return of Danny Brough hasn’t had the effect that many thought it would have on Nathan Brown’s men, with the Giants suffering unexpected losses to Bradford and Castleford since the half-back’s return.
Hull KR did manage to beat a couple of the lesser sides prior to last week’s heavy loss at St Helens, but that certainly isn’t enough to gloss over what has essentially been a very disappointing season for the Robins.
I’m expecting this to be the week in which we see a backlash from Huddersfield as they return to the Galpharm Stadium. They may well still be missing a couple of key forwards, but they should still have enough to match Hull’s pack, and their backline is much more solid defensively, with the Robins backline, Briscoe aside, awash with suspect defenders. I can’t see Huddersfield having too many problems covering the -14.5 pts on the handicap.
