Super League Betting: Wigan/Warrington double anyone?

League leaders Warrington clash with fourth-placed St Helens at the Halliwell Jones on Friday evening and Tony Smith’s side will be looking to complete the double over their Lancashire rivals having beaten them 25-18 earlier in the year.

Saints have looked jaded in the last few weeks, scrambling a 14-all draw at Odsal before falling to a comprehensive defeat at the hands of derby rivals Wigan last Friday. Royce Simmons’ men were struggling from the off against the Warriors, only a couple of late Saints tries giving the score line some credibility.

Warrington have had their mishaps this season, their loss to Salford after the Exiles game a worrying flashback to the Wire of old, but they have been hugely impressive when on song, with Huddersfield the only side in the top four to have taken points off the Wolves.

Saints have been stretched by injuries for some time now, but it’s the Exiles fixture that really looks to have taken the edge of their previously impressive defensive. Wigan were able to cut them open far too easily for my liking and I don’t see a week of rest being sufficient for them to plug those holes.

I can’t see how this free-scoring Warrington side won’t pose at least as many problems for the Saints and don’t expect a handicap of -10.5 points to be enough.

Catalans‘ atrocious discipline was more to blame for their downfall than anything Huddersfield did last week and Nathan Brown’s team were somewhat fortunate to leave the Shay with victory.

Danny Brough and Luke O’Donnell are still missing and I don’t expect them to get away with such an average performance this week away to Wigan.

I have to admit to being rather surprised as to how well Wigan coped with Saints’ forwards last week, the emerging talents of Tuson, Prescott and Mossop all having blinders in the local derby.

An injury picked up in that games forces Tuson out of this week’s 19-man squad and his replacement looks certain to make the headlines regardless of the outcome. There are few more gifted forwards in Britain than Gareth Hock, and he makes his eagerly awaited return from a drugs ban on Saturday evening.

I highlighted a gulf in class in the halfbacks as a reason to be against the Giants last week, and although that wager was undone by the Dragons’ inability to keep their discipline, I can’t see Wigan being guilty of the same problems. The Warriors are asked to give up 10.5 points on the Betfair handicap, but with home advantage and a definite edge in the backs, I don’t envisage Huddersfield being able to stop Michael Maguire’s men doing the double over them.
