Belief in Bachmann Not Reflected in Odds to Win Republican Nomination
According to the pollsters, Minnesota Representative Michelle Bachmann, who announced her candidacy for the Republican Nomination for President of the United States last week, is running neck and neck with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney to represent the elephant party in the 0 Election. Political handicappers aren’t buying it.
The pollsters and handicappers so far aren’t close to being on the same page as Governor Romney continues to be a huge favorite to take his party’s nomination even though he was belted with questions regarding the version of Obamacare that he gifted to the citizens of Massachusetts when governor. Romney is at +50 to win the Republican nod. That makes him a virtual lock in the eyes of political handicappers.
Bachmann isn’t even the second choice on the board. After Romney, the handicappers favor former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, a Bachmann rival. Pawlenty, although already showcasing his lack of knowledge regarding the economy with his belief that a 5% increase in GNP per year is possible, is holding strong at +50.
A candidate that hasn’t even made his campaign official yet, Texas Governor Rick Perry, is the third choice on the board at +400. Perry’s a sort of George W. Bush clone, although many politicos consider him more conservative than Dubya was, meaning that once he makes his nomination official, he could jump right to the top of the polls. After Perry, the handicappers favor former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman who served some time as Ambassador to China in the Obama Administration. Huntsman is at +450 to win the nomination.
Then, there’s Bachmann. Bachmann isn’t receiving nearly the love that Romney, Pawlenty, Perry and Huntsman are. Perhaps, handicappers are more in tune to what went on this past weekend than those who participate in polls. An unprepared Bachmann bombed when asked how she could defend cutting Federal hand outs after she and her husband received numerous subsides for corn production and training at a medical facility that they owned. In any case, those who like Bachmann are getting a sweet +800 on her to win the Republican Nomination.
