British Open: Wild finish in store in Sandwich

It should be a wild finish to the British Open in Sandwich, England, as 12 golfers sit within five shots of the lead heading into Sunday’s final round.Darren Clarke, who posted a 1-under-par 69 on Saturday, is 5-under for the tournament, one shot ahead of Dustin Johnson. But Clarke is not the favorite, according to BetOnline’s latest odds.Johnson is set at +200, followed by Clarke at +250 and Rickie Fowler (-2) at +650. Thomas Bjorn (-2) is listed at +1200. Miguel Angel Jimenez (-1), Martin Kaymer (E) and Phil Mickelson (E) all are at +1500.

Clarke, a Northern Ireland native, is seeking his first career major, though he did win earlier this season at the Iberdrola Open.

Clarke and Johnson traded the lead several times during the third round, until Johnson bogeyed the par-4 17th. Johnson will be looking for his fifth PGA Tour victory and first major on Sunday.

Fowler, a fellow American, fired a 68 on Saturday and sits three strokes off the pace with first-round co-leader Bjorn, of Denmark.

Jimenez and American Lucas Glover are four shots back.

The weather – as it traditionally does – made its presence known on Saturday, and more difficult conditions are in store for Sunday. The rain will stick around, though wind gusts may subside from 35 miles per hour to around 20 miles per hour.

Reigning U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy trails Clarke by nine strokes after he signed for a 4-over 74 on Saturday.

McIlroy has hardly looked like the rising star who obliterated the field with an eight-stroke victory in a record-setting performance at last month’s U.S. Open.
