Simply Masterful: Schwartzel wins at Augusta at 80-1
South African Charl Schwartzel claimed his first career major title by winning the 75th Masters by two strokes on Sunday. Oddsmakers had him set at 80-1 to win at the beginning of the tournament and at 12-1 heading into Sunday’s action.
The 26-year-old Schwartzel capped a wild final round which featured seven different leaders to finish at 14-under-par for the tournament. Schwartzel posted a 6-under-par 66 on the final round, highlighted by a lengthy putt which rolled in to a chorus of cheers.
Schwartzel tossed his arms to the sky and brandished a wide smile after sinking the putt.
The victory marked the second time in four years that the winner didn’te out of the final pairing.
Australians Jason Day and Adam Scott finished tied for second at 12-under, while Tiger Woods, Geoff Ogilvy and Luke Donald ended up in a tie at 10-under.
Woods had a number of sportsbooks sweating as he got off to a fast start in his last round.
“Tiger winning is the worst case scenario,” Greg Sindall of SportsInteraction told Covers Sunday afternoon. “Bettors were all over him leading up to Thursday. I guess bettors are still not used to seeing Tiger not as the favorite – especially at Augusta. Friday’s 66 made things worse!”
“Tiger was +1200 starting off today and we had limited action on him at that number, no real interest in him before he teed off, not until he put a few early birdies on the board, ” Brian Taylor of Sportsbetting added.
Schwartzel recorded an eagle on the par-4 third hole and then set off 10 straight pars. The South African looked to have fallen short, but registered four consecutive birdies to finish his round.
The final flourish left Scott in the dust, while Woods’ five-under 67 on Sunday was just not good enough to keep pace.
Defending champion Phil Mickelson shot a 2-over 74 in his final round, and was never in contention. The three-time Masters champion finished at 1-under for the tournament.
