Summer sports betting tips outside the baseball diamond
As the dog days of summer near, some are feeling the fatigue of baseball betting. Fortunately, most books offer lines for niche sports that fill the slow wagering season. Oddsmakers don’t dedicate the amount of time they should creating numbers for these other leagues, so there is value to be had. Below, we identify four betting tips from the freaks of the sports world. No shocker (WNBA)Nolan Richardson’s “40 Minutes of Hell” from his days at Arkansas didn’t carry over to the Tulsa Shock. And perhaps that’s why he stepped down as head coach last Saturday. The Shock’s recent inability to score points has equated to four unders in their last five outings. The total in Wednesday’s game against Chicago opened at 156 and closed at 152. The under came through by 30 points as Tulsa fell 72-54.Last Sunday, the Shock squared off against the high-octane Phoenix Mercury with a total of 180.5, which was bet down 3 points by tipoff. Diana Taurasi and Co. did their part, scoring 102 points but Tulsa only managed to put 63 on the scoreboard.Tulsa hosts the Sparks on Friday and is at New York on Sunday.Wrapped and resting (AFL)The AFL regular season is a couple of weeks away frompletion and two teams have wrapped up home-field advantage. Jacksonville secured home-field in the American Conference two weeks ago after starting the year 13-1. Since then the Sharks are 0-2. They lost a road game to San Jose, 83-70, two weeks ago as 10-point favorites. Last Saturday they were laying 11 points at home to Dallas and lost 75-70. Jacksonville is 1-5 against the spread in its last six outings. The Rattlers clinched home-field in the National Conference with a win over Pittsburgh last Sunday. They have a bye this weekend but play at Dallas on July 23.Ground and pound (CFL)The Boatmen boasted the best defense in the CFL last season by allowing an average of 24.6 points per game. Toronto’s stout defense, along with its propensity to run the ball, produced a 6-12 over/under mark in 2010.”We’re a team that is going to run the ball because philosophically that’s what I believe in,” Argonauts head coach Jim Barker said prior to this season. The Argos toted the rock a league-high 21 times in Week 1. The total in that game against Calgary opened at 53, was bet down to 51 and still went under by a touchdown. Last week’s total dropped to 47 by kickoff but the 22-16 oue against Winnipeg still allowed the under to cash.Toronto even got away from its plan in Week 2 because Cory Boyd got injured. He won’t play Friday night but the Argonauts don’t want Cleo Lemon throwing the ball 30 times. They will need to keep Montreal QB Anthony Calvillo off the field with run-heavy, time-consuming drives.Draw your weapon (MLS)Ties in MLS pay out at minimum +200 odds, which is why the Chicago Fire have been white hot at the betting window this season. The Men in Red have played to a draw in seven of their last nine outings. Since Frank Klopas took over as interim head coach the club is 1-1-6. With 12 ties in 19 games this year, bettors that have wagered on the draw in every Fire match have earned 17.30 units. Chicago hosts Portland on Saturday and the match has draw odds of +225.Betting matchups, news and trends for the WNBA, AFL, CFL and MLS can be found in the more sports section of Covers.
