Alonso dreaming of the title

Fernando Alonso has certainly improved in recent races but surely there is no chance he can catch Sebastian Vettel and win the Formula One world drivers championship.

The Ferrari driver won the British Grand Prix last time out but still sits a mammoth 92 points behind the Red Bull driver and defending world champion with only nine races to go this season.

Vettel has looked dominant so far in the Formula One season and the majority of the grid has been forced to watch him streak ahead, often from flag to finish, in races around the world. Those placing F1 bets will have been very impressed.

Alonso, himself a twice Formula One world drivers champion, has a hell of a lot of ground to make up on Vettel and he claims to be focused on taking one race at a time – but his win at Silverstone was only his first of the season and it would take quite a turnaround in fortunes for him to overtake Vettel.

He reckons Ferrari remain realistic about their potential title chances but they need to be honest as 92 points is a very big gap considering the number of races remaining.

We will tackle the races one at a time, trying to win as many as possible, Alonso said.

This will also involve taking a few more risks and maybe it will happen that we pay a high price for that, but there is no alternative.

McLaren man Jenson Button sits 92 points behind Vettel in the world drivers championship and is out to make up for a poor performance at Silverstone. Those looking at the F1 betting odds will be keeping a close eye on him.

Button and Alonso may harbour optimistic dreams of catching the Red Bull man and pip the title away, but they need to be realistic and ensure they do not take unnecessary risks which could do more harm than good over the rest of the season.
