Bartoli has her revenge

Maria Sharapova and Marion Bartoli have advanced to the semi-finals at the Bank of the West Classic, the second of ten events in the US Open Series.

Bartoli, who hails from Auvergne in France, defeated her opponent, Canadian player, Rebecca Marino, in straight sets to book her place in the finals, while Sharapova sunk Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to progress to the next stage of the competition.

Sharapova could now face Serena Williams, if the American defeats Maria Kirilenko on Thursday.

I love this tournament, Bartoli said. Its a great way for me to start back.

Bartoli described her victory over Marino as revenge, having lost to the Canadian in Quebec, last year.

Bartoli is 40/1 in the US Open 2011 betting and seems to be in decent shape heading into the tournament.

Unfortunately, the US Open is her weakest event; she has yet to progress beyond the fourth round in almost a decade of trying. Her performance at Wimbledon is comparatively, superb. Bartoli lost in the final of the esteemed tournament in 2007, against Venus Williams. She reached the quarterfinals at SW19 in 2011.

The 26-year-old exited in the semi-finals at the Roland Garros in 2011, making this year one of the most successful of her career. However, as Wimbledon and the French Open are played on soft courts, grass and clay, respectively, it would be unwise to assume that her current run of form will extend to the US Open, which is played on a hard surface. Anyone looking at the tennis online betting should remember this.

Notably, Bartoli lost in the second round of the other hard court major in 2011, the Australian Open.
