Can Poulter win the Open?
Ian Poulter is confident he can win his first Major at the British Open, but is remains to be seen how well the Englishman is suited to the course at Sandwich.
The 35-year-old did manage a second-placed finish at the British Open back in 2008 but that is the only time he has finished in the top ten.
Poulters main problem has been consistency and often in previous tournaments played on links courses has struggled, and that could be the case at Royal St Georges, something thats reflected in the British Open odds.
The layout at Sandwich is not very popular among golfers but it should offer a good test for the players and some real entertainment for the fans.
Keeping the ball on the fairway off the tee is going to be vital, while the majority of the greens are well protected. Those following the British Open promotions will realise this.
This means to any mistakes are likely to be punished but Poulter, who has only one victory to his name this season, has been practising on the course as he looks to avoid a repeat of the last two years – where he failed to make the cut at the 2009 British Open and finished 60th 12 months later.
Ive been down there practicing this week, Tuesday and Wednesday, said Poulter.
I feel very good. Ive been here having some fun this weekend so I feel very relaxed and Im ready to go.
US Open champion Rory McIlroy will go into the British Open as one of the most fancied players to win the tournament, and Poulter has hailed the incredible achievement the young Northern Irishman had in winning his first Major at the tender age of 22.
