Can Sharapova continue her recovery?
Maria Sharapova sensationally came to the world’s attention in 2004 when she defied the odds to win Wimbledon aged just 17, beating two-time defending champion Serena Williams.
Her career was predicted to be littered with Grand Slam titles after showing such resolve at such an early age. And these predictions could have come to fruition, but a career plagued with injury troubles has derailed her progress. Those following the US Open betting will know this.
The Russian became world number one in 2005, despite not winning a Grand Slam that year. But at such a young age, making three semi finals and a quarter final still suggested big things were going to happen. 2006 was an even better year as she made the semi finals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon before winning the US Open, at this point Sharapova was truly the one to beat.
However, 2007 brought the first bout of frustration as a shoulder injury forced her to miss many tournaments and caused inconsistent performances. 2008 started on a brighter note when she won the Australian Open but it was later revealed that Sharapova was suffering from a rotator cuff tear, which forced her out of the game again. Ever since the surgery required to fix the problem it has been a long road of rehabilitation and varying results, not quite recapturing the spark. Those looking at the tennis betting prices should bear this in mind.
A real testament to Sharapova is her performance in 2011, showing that she may well be overcoming adversity enough to break back to her best form. A semi final at Rolland Garros and final at Wimbledon certainly showed her capabilities again so will we see her go a step further at Flushing Meadows?
