Formula One teams vote against new plans
Formula One teams have rejected plans to introduce extreme changes to F1 cars in time for the 2013 season. The FIA, the sports governing body, had been keen to bring back ground-effect underbody aerodynamics, effects traditionally used to create downforce, increase grip on the track, and allow for cornering at greater speeds. The aims of the FIA in general were to reduce fuel consumption considerably and to make the cars more of a challenge to keep control of during a race.
However, technical chiefs in F1 have voted to reject the changes and instead push for the introduction of less drastic alterations that will not represent a major step away from the current look and feel of cars but will at the same time cut fuel consumption and reduce the level of drag.
With some in the sport believing that the changes would involve an unrealistic amount of work from the teams involved and a significant financial outlay at a time when the recession is hitting the pockets of fans of the sport across the world, the reasons for the opposition are clear to see. As anyone looking at the F1 odds 2011 will know, this season has featured a significant tech shake up and the teams seem keen not to have another one.
Although the FIA will be able to try their best to push through the changes despite the feelings of the teams, with the governing body set to think about whether to do just that before the end of June, whether or not they would be willing to introduce alterations to the rules that would alienate teams and perhaps fans as well remains to be seen.
Either way, fans will just want to see anything introduced that will make the sport more exciting, since the current dominance of Sebastian Vettel is getting just a little bit predictable and boring, especially for those who are new to the sport.
