McIlroy pleased with Open plan

Rory McIlroy has hit back at critics who have question the way he has prepared for the Open Championship, by insisting it was important to have some time off.

The Northern Irishman has not played a competitive round since his emphatic US Open success at Congressional – with the final played on June 19.

McIlroy stunned the golfing world with his six-shot victory and with all the hype surrounding his first major success, then decided to get away from the spotlight and enjoy some family time.

Some pundits, including former Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie, have questioned McIlroys choice to spend time away from the course. Those looking at the Open betting will be wondering what sort of impact this will have on him.

The 22-year-old withdrew from last weeks French Open and decided not to play in the Scottish Open – the final tournament before the third major of the year.

But McIlroy insists he feels that was the right thing for him and the youngest winner since Bobby Jones in 1923, has enjoyed some early practice at Royal St Georges.

Speaking on his personal website, the man from Holywood said: Because of what happened at Congressional and the way it became such a big deal, I wanted to get everything out of the way and sorted, so that when I did start playing again I could just concentrate on golf.

McIlroy added: There were so many commitments and so much media to do that I would have not been able to give my best, so I decided to wait until I was absolutely ready.

The Ryder Cup star enjoyed two days of contrasting conditions at Sandwich, with one calm day and one when the wind got up, which he feels gave him a great feel for the course.
