Spilborghs, CarGo impress in win over Mariners
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Ryan Spilborghs and Carlos Gonzalez each had two-run hits in a five-run third inning, as the Rockies bested the Mariners, 6-3, at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick on Wednesday night before a crowd of 12,261 — the Rockies’ seventh straight sellout.
Ian Stewart’s double, Chris Iannetta’s single and Willy Taveras’ infield single loaded the bases for Spilborghs, who slapped a two-run single. Gonzalez followed with a two-run double, and would drive in a third later in the game. Troy Tulowitzki drove in the final run of the frame on a fielder’s choice grounder.
All of the runs came against Mariners left-hander Luke French, who went to Heritage High School just outside of Denver. His old high school team played in a tournament in the Phoenix area, and attended the game against the Rockies.
Rockies starting left-hander Jorge De La Rosa struck out eight and didn’t walk any over six innings of work. De La Rosa gave up three runs on four hits, two to Ryan Langerhans, who led off the third with a first-pitch homer, and then blooped a double in the fifth.
