Tindall and Easter await captaincy call

With Lewis Moody ruled out of England’s opening three games of the Six Nations with his knee injury, Martin Johnson will this week name his replacement skipper with Mike Tindall and Nick Easter the front-runners for the gig. Both players have plenty of experience at this level but Harlequins number eight Easter has captained England more recently than Tindall and appears to be leading the race.

Easter has worn the captain’s armband in November against Samoa as well as twice against the Barbarians and the 32 year old has made it clear he would relish the chance to lead his country in the tournament if he’s given the nod by Johnson.

“Captaining England is a massive honour and I have enjoyed doing it in the past, so of course, if the opportunity came along, I would take it with both hands,” he said.

The loss of Moody will have an effect on England but there is more than enough experience and leadership throughout the squad to cover for their injured captain. Johnson’s side will need to be fully focused when they line-up at the Millennium Stadium against Wales on Friday night. The Welsh will be chomping at the bit to start their campaign off with a win in front of their home fans and the rugby betting suggests it will be a tight game.

England have been set the target of finishing this year’s championships in the top two and they will need to grind out a result against Wales if they are going to achieve that. Failure to reach the target set by the RFU could have a serious impact on Johnson job chances, picking the right captain will be an integral part of the plans.
