United ‘want one more player’
Despite Alex Fergusons assurance that Manchester United will not be making any more purchases this summer it appears that the club are still interesting in signing a world-class player.
We are looking at one more player to bring in, United chief executive David Gill said. However, he added nothing is happening, and nothing is imminent.
Manchester United have been linked with Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder in recent weeks, a player who has the backing of former Red Devils player David Beckham.
The LA Galaxy star notes that the Dutchman would fit right into the current United squad, and could prove a worthy replacement for Paul Scholes, who retired at the end of last season. Those looking at the Betfair Premier League odds will know they need someone to fill his boots.
Ferguson has previously distanced his club from Sneijder, claiming that United has no real interest in the player.
David Gill is adamant that United will not buy players purely for the sake of spending money. The important point to understand is that we need someone whos going to improve the quality of the squad.
Sneijder, who made his name at Ajax in the mid-2000s, and has scored eight goals for Internazionale in 51 appearances, would certainly fit the bill. He was a contender for the Ballon dOr award in 2010, but lost out to Barcelona player, Lionel Messi.
While Gills comments almost certainly hint at a renewed effort by the Red Devils to purchase Sneijder, the likelihood is that the 27-year-olds £35m price tag, coupled with his £190,000-a-week wage demands, will continue to cause problems for the club. United has already spent close to £50m on three players this summer and people looking at the Betfair football betting will be wondering how much more cash the side has.
The speculation surrounding Sneijder could ultimately, be academic; Inter have been hostile to clubs approaching their star player. There has never been the intention to listen to [offers], explained Marco Branca, the Italian clubs technical director. He is not for sale.
Manchester United are currently on a pre-season tour of the United States, and will play the MLS All-Stars, later today.
