Wiggins to benefit from Team Sky success

Bradley Wiggins bid for success in the 2011 Tour de France will have been boosted by Team Sky getting their maiden stage win – meaning most of the teams focus will now go on their main man.

The two-time Olympic track champion finished fourth in his debut Tour de France in 2009, when riding for Garmin, but then in 2010 he struggled on the mountains and ended up finishing back in 24th place. Those looking at the Tour de France best odds will be wondering if he can do better this tim around.

Wiggins was the first big name to sign up for British-based Team Sky in December 2009 and he has been the leader since day one.

They were still a fledgling team in the 2010 Tour de France and their lack of experience in the big race played a part in Wiggins struggling to match the heights of 12 months earlier.

The Englishman now holds aspirations of a podium finish in this years Tour de France and, while he may not be able to match the climbing prowess of the likes of favourites Alberto Contador, Cadel Evans and Andy Schleck, he is hoping the team around him can play a major part.

Now Team Sky have secured their much-awaited first Tour de France stage win, coming courtesy of Edvald Boasson Hagen on Stage Six, the main aim of the outfit will now be to guide and support Wiggins to that podium finish. Anyone placing Tour de France bets will be keeping a close eye on him.

Team Sky principal Dave Brailsford said: To come here, get a stage win early on, takes the pressure off Bradley.

It is all about momentum, energy and confidence. Its exciting times.

Team Sky also have Geraint Thomas in the White Jersey for best young rider in the Tour de France and Brailsford admits the Welshman is a fantastic asset to the team and will play a big part in helping Wiggins – while also hoping to hold onto his own glory for the duration of the race.
