Woosnam expects European domination

Former Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam expects more European success at this weeks Open Championship at Royal St Georges.

European Tour members have won the last five majors and the top four places in the world rankings are currently occupied by Europeans and the Welshman says hes delighted that European golf is back to its former glories.

During Woosnams heyday, he was part of the famous five alongside Sandy Lyle, Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo and Bernard Langer as they dominated the world of golf throughout the late eighties and into the early nineties.

Between them they won 16 Majors and although he admits the likes of Rory McIlroy and Martin Kaymer have a long way to go before they can get near that figure, he is predicting another European winner at Sandwich on Sunday as the current crop try to emulate their predecessors. Those keeping track of the British Open golf betting may want to bear his comments in mind.

Of the current crop, any one of them could win The Open – the strength in depth on the Tour now is that good he told reporters. Rory McIlroys obviously in fabulous form, and Id love to see Lee Westwood win it.

Hes put such a lot into his game, and done so much for the good of the game over the past 15 years, that I feel he deserves it.

When quizzed on the subject of why he thought that European golf had suddenly experienced such a upturn in fortunes, following eight years without a major winner before Padraig Harringtons victory at Carnoustie in 2007, Woosnam pointed towards the ever improving standard of the European Tour and believes it can only get better.

Its been a gradual process, but over the last decade the gap between the US PGA and The European Tours has closed year on year he continued. Thats mainly down to the fact that as soon as you start having Major success, it breeds more success.
